'Kalyani Remix' With Shreya Ghoshal Becomes First Malayalam Song On YouTube's Global Chart
ARJN, KDS, RONN and FIFTY4's reworked hit peaked at No. 2, carried by a dance trend, a Saniya Iyappan video and a few unexpected reposts.

"Kalyani Remix", the Shreya Ghoshal-featuring version of a Malayalam independent hit by ARJN, KDS, RONN and FIFTY4, has become the first Malayalam song to enter YouTube's Global Charts. It peaked at No. 2, according to Def Jam Recordings India, which released the track.
The original "Kalyani" had already passed 90 million streams on Spotify before the remix arrived. Adding Ghoshal, among the best-known playback voices in the country, gave the song a second life without stripping out its Malayalam character.
The numbers
The remix went to No. 1 on YouTube's charts in India and the UAE, and reached No. 3 on YouTube's Top 200 for India. It also topped Shazam's Top 200 in both countries and Shazam's Viral chart in India.
The run was not limited to one platform. Streaming, video and song recognition charts all moved at once, which usually means listeners are finding a track in several places at the same time.
Its music video stars Malayalam actor Saniya Iyappan and has crossed 30 million views on YouTube.
How it travelled
Much of the push came from the choreography. Creator Neeluvami's recreation of Iyappan's moves passed two million views, and Iyappan responded to it herself, which kept the trend going. Actor Akhila Bhargavan joined in with a semi-classical routine set to Ghoshal's portion of the song.
Then the reposts started arriving from further afield. Cordell Broadus shared the track, and his father Snoop Dogg followed by posting the "Kalyani Remix" video on Instagram.
Most of that reach came from dancers and creators picking the song up on their own, rather than from paid placement.
Who made it
ARJN, KDS, RONN and FIFTY4 have been working together for a while, with earlier releases including "Nera", "Sheriya" and "Chillara Flex". Their sound starts from contemporary Kerala pop and pulls in Afro-R&B, hip-hop and melodic pop, a mix that has been finding listeners well outside Kerala.
The milestone matters for Malayalam music, which has tended to reach wide audiences through film soundtracks rather than independent singles. "Kalyani" got there as a non-film song, with a playback star brought in on the remix rather than the other way round.
